Ponto-cho is a traditional downtown area located in central Kyoto, on the west bank of the Kamo River. Its narrow alleys are densely packed with long-established ryotei restaurants, teahouses, and small bars, where visitors can enjoy Kyoto’s traditional food culture. Ponto-cho is especially famous for its traditional Kyoto cuisine and maiko (apprentice geisha). At night, the area is lit by lanterns, creating a fantastic atmosphere. The area is a favorite cultural spot for tourists and locals alike.
