Sumiyoshi Taisha is one of the oldest shrines in Japan and is especially known for New Year’s Hatsumode. Although the shrine is closed at night, it is sometimes open for nighttime worship during special events. For locals, it is a place of history and tradition, a place to visit with a sense of sacredness.
