Unzen Jigoku is a geothermal area spreading out around Unzen Onsen, characterized by hot steam and hot mud spewing from the surface of the earth.
As the name “hell” implies, the landscape is wild and the fumaroles emit the aroma of sulfur. This area has been developed as a tourist attraction, and visitors can observe geothermal activity up close while walking along the promenade.
The Jigokudani also has famous landmarks such as “White Cloud Pond” and “Devil’s Footprints,” where visitors can feel the power of nature.
